How to Play the FLAMES Game (Rules & Examples)
You play FLAMES by writing two names side by side, crossing out the letters they share, and counting the letters left over. Then you count that number around the letters F-L-A-M-E-S, striking one each round, until a single letter remains โ revealing Friends, Lovers, Affectionate, Marriage, Enemies, or Siblings.

FLAMES is a classic pen-and-paper love game you can learn in two minutes. You take two names, cross out the letters they share, count what’s left, and use that number to eliminate letters from the word FLAMES until one remains. That final letter โ Friends, Lovers, Affectionate, Marriage, Enemies or Siblings โ is your result. Here’s exactly how to do it, by hand.
What You Need
Nothing but a pen and paper (or the notes app on your phone). FLAMES works with any two names โ a crush, a friend, a celebrity couple. Full first names are the most common choice, but nicknames work too; just know that a different spelling can change the result. Prefer a number over a letter? You can also calculate a love percentage by name with our other name game.
The Rules, Step by Step
- 1
Write both names side by side. Use the same format for each โ both full names, or both nicknames.
- 2
Cross out the letters they share. For every letter that appears in both names, strike one from each name. Match them one pair at a time.
- 3
Count the letters left over across both names combined. That total is your FLAMES number.
- 4
Write out F-L-A-M-E-S. Starting at F, count along the letters up to your number. Cross out the letter you land on, then keep counting from the next letter, wrapping around, until only one letter is left.
- 5
The last letter standing is your result.
A Full Worked Example
Let’s play RAHUL and PRIYA.
Step 1โ2: cross out shared letters. Both names share R and A, so we strike one of each from both:
RAHUL โ R A H U L โ leaves H, U, L
PRIYA โ P R I Y A โ leaves P, I, Y
Step 3: count what’s left. 3 + 3 = 6 letters. Our FLAMES number is 6.
Step 4: eliminate around F-L-A-M-E-S, counting 6 each time.
Count 6 โ land on S โ strike it. Left: F L A M E
Count 6 from F โ land on F โ strike it. Left: L A M E
Count 6 from L โ land on A โ strike it. Left: L M E
Count 6 from M โ land on L โ strike it. Left: M E
Count 6 from M โ land on E โ strike it. Left: M
Result: M โ Marriage ๐
That’s the whole game. The same pair of names always gives the same answer, so there’s no rerolling.
What Each FLAMES Letter Means
| Letter | Stands for | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| F | Friends | A warm, easy bond. |
| L | Lovers | Sparks and romance โ the classic result. |
| A | Affectionate | Soft, tender fondness. |
| M | Marriage | All the way to wedding bells. |
| E | Enemies | Playful friction โ opposites who clash. |
| S | Siblings | Brother-sister closeness, not romance. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Cancelling a letter more than once. Each shared letter cancels only one letter from each name. If a letter appears twice in one name but once in the other, you can only strike one pair.
- Forgetting to count both names. Your FLAMES number is the leftover letters from both names added together.
- Counting the struck letter again. Once a letter in FLAMES is crossed out, skip it โ count only the letters still standing.
- Mixing name formats. “Mike” vs “Michael” can give different results. Pick one style and stick with it.
Variations of the Game
FLAMES has been played for decades, so you’ll find local twists:
- Different words. Some regions swap “Affectionate” for “Affection,” or use an extra outcome so the acronym changes.
- Full names vs first names. Adding surnames makes results feel more “official” and changes the count.
- Group play. Friends run every possible pair in the room and compare โ the fun is in the reactions, not the accuracy.
FLAMES: Quick FAQs
What does FLAMES stand for?
Friends, Lovers, Affectionate, Marriage, Enemies, and Siblings โ the six possible results of the game.
How does the FLAMES calculation work?
Write two names side by side, cross out the letters they share one pair at a time, and count the letters left over. Then count that number around the letters F-L-A-M-E-S, striking out the letter you land on each round, until a single letter remains โ that’s your result.
Is FLAMES accurate?
Not really โ it’s a game, not a prediction. The result comes purely from the letters in the two names, so it can’t measure real compatibility or feelings. Enjoy it for the fun, not as relationship advice.
